Title: | The influence of chemical oxidation and polishing on the surface and characteristics of a glassy carbon electrode | Authors: | Marković, Vesna Vukelić, Nikola Marković, Dragan |
Keywords: | carbon;electrode;oxidation | Issue Date: | 1-Jan-1989 | Journal: | Fuel | Abstract: | The effects of chemical oxidation and polishing on the condition of a glassy carbon surface have been investigated. The electrochemical characteristics of the laboratory-made glassy carbon electrode were examined and found to be satisfactory. Chemical oxidation with chromic acid led to a considerable decrease in the difference between the anodic and cathodic current-potential peaks (ΔEp), indicating increased reversibility of the electrode processes. Glassy carbon samples were treated in the same manner as the electrode by polishing and/or chemical oxidation with chromic acid, and the topography of the treated surfaces was examined by SEM. It was found that mechanical damage caused by abrasives plays a significant role in surface destruction by chromic acid. © 1989. |
